You might be surprised to find out that ozonation systems sometimes take center stage during the filming of Hollywood motion pictures. They often clarify and disinfect more than the one million gallons of water needed during the filmmaking process. Ozone systems improve the water clarity for underwater filming and also provided disinfection.
Actors and support divers can spend several hours per day in the water during filming and filmmakers work hard to prevent any undue discomfort to the cast and crew. Properly disinfected water helps to prevent ear infections, a common affliction among divers. “One thing that helped a lot was the fact that for the water filtration, we were using a very sophisticated ozonation process rather than chlorine,” notes Peter Giuliano, director of ‘Sphere’. “We knew that on previous underwater films, chlorine proved to be very irritating to the eyes, hair and skin, and we were able to avoid any of those problems.”
Ozone is used in filmmaking for much the same reason as it is in the aquarium world, there is no residual disinfectant left in the water. This is important because it means that there are no harsh chemicals damaging the expensive filming equipment or wetsuits that the crews work in while filming in and under water. In fact, after being purified by ozone systems, the water that actors and film crews work is literally bottled water. The systems most often utilized by the motion picture industry include an ozone generator and a catalytic destruct module that converts ozone to oxygen before venting it to the atmosphere.
